What is Info-Activism?

Info-Activism is an approach which helps rights advocates tactically utilise information, communications and digital technologies to enhance advocacy work. Tactical Tech believes that new technologies have significant potential to enhance the work of campaigners and advocates, giving them the tools to gather and analyse information and the means to turn that information into action. In this website, we would like to introduce you to our new initiative - The Info-Activism Camp which will be held in Bangalore, India between the 19th and 25th of February 2009. More about our approach to Info-Activism can be found here.

Participants and Facilitators

This is an event for experienced professionals actively working with marginalised communities and the non-profit sector in the global South, with experience in advocacy and campaigning, and regional or international networks. Camp participants will be advocates, technologists, designers and strategists who have used or plan to use technology tools and tactics in their campaigns. They need not be experts but need to have a proven aptitude for the use of technology tools and basic computing skills along with a track-record of active involvement in rights advocacy initiatives.

We are interested in a range of skills and expertise, be it in campaigning, design or technology. We are particularly interested in applications from advocates who deal with issues such as Sex Workers Rights, HIV and AIDS, LGBT rights and environmental justice. Participants whose work centres on the gathering, dissemination and design of information would also benefit immensely.

Facilitators are selected by the organisers, with input from the advisory group and the team that develops the agenda for the event. The traditional lecture-heavy approach is avoided in all our camps, and discussion and exchange are encouraged instead.

Facilitators will be drawn from three pools:

  • Active digital advocacy implementers, technology/NGO practitioners and researchers in the region. This group will include trainers and technical support professionals.
  • Experienced advocacy trainers. A limited number of people will be invited from the pool of trainers that have been identified and developed through Tactical Tech's previous events. We have a large network of expert trainers and facilitators who we have worked with in the past.
  • New facilitators. We have found that the best way to ensure that new expertise is identified and acknowledged is to identify new facilitators from the application pool.

  • Police Brutality Exposed

For many years, human rights organisations have reported that torture and abuse were rampant in Egypt's police stations. It wasn't until videos emerged showing some of the worst of these violations that the spotlight truly fell on the conduct of Egypt's police. Bloggers such as Wael Abbas brought international attention to police torture by publicising these videos – that show officers committing atrocities on suspects.
