What is Info-Activism?

Info-Activism is an approach which helps rights advocates tactically utilise information, communications and digital technologies to enhance advocacy work. Tactical Tech believes that new technologies have significant potential to enhance the work of campaigners and advocates, giving them the tools to gather and analyse information and the means to turn that information into action. In this website, we would like to introduce you to our new initiative - The Info-Activism Camp which will be held in Bangalore, India between the 19th and 25th of February 2009. More about our approach to Info-Activism can be found here.

Visualizing Information for Advocacy: An Introduction to Information Design

Modern life is saturated with ever increasing amounts of information, advertising and media with little time to digest what is being said. Against this background, NGOs and advocates too often find the information they want to communicate, either buried in long reports full of professional jargon and statistics, or overlooked in an endless stream of media releases.

Visualizing Information for Advocacy: An Introduction to Information Design is a booklet aimed at helping NGOs and advocates strengthen their campaigns and projects through communicating vital information visually and with greater impact. This booklet aims to raise awareness, introduce concepts, and promote good practice in information design – a powerful tool for advocacy, outreach, research, organization and education.

The PDF of the booklet can be downloaded at http://www.tacticaltech.org/infodesign. A hard copy is also available for order at the same address. Languages: English available now, Russian to be released October 2008. Workshops available from 2009.

  • Ring Tone Startles President

In the Philippines, part of an alleged conversation between the Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano and Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has become a hugely popular ring tone on mobile phones - the "Hello Garci" ringtone started circulating online days after tapes of this supposed conversation about vote rigging surfaced in the media. The 17-second greeting is top of the charts on phones, as Mrs Arroyo struggles with record low popularity. The authorities have barred the media from broadcasting any portion of it, saying it is part of a plot against the president.
