What is Info-Activism?

Info-Activism is an approach which helps rights advocates tactically utilise information, communications and digital technologies to enhance advocacy work. Tactical Tech believes that new technologies have significant potential to enhance the work of campaigners and advocates, giving them the tools to gather and analyse information and the means to turn that information into action. In this website, we would like to introduce you to our new initiative - The Info-Activism Camp which will be held in Bangalore, India between the 19th and 25th of February 2009. More about our approach to Info-Activism can be found here.

Background

Gathering and distribution of information are key functions for rights advocates as they witness violations, identify injustice and expose misconduct. Although advocacy organisations are constantly inventing new ways to communicate and add weight to their messages, it is a few who successfully reach their audiences or achieve their targets of change. Governments, corporations and mainstream media prove tough opposition for those with less power and resources in the information space. Rights advocates thus need to find artful ways to increase the power of their information and leverage available resources to create maximum impact.

The Info-Activism camp is a means to achieve that end. The camp seeks to raise awareness of the possibilities available in information, communication and digital technologies for advocates working at grass-root levels. It will inspire advocates by showcasing examples, helping them find the right solutions to meet their needs, connecting them with others facing similar challenges and with complementary skill sets, and building their skill-base. Camp participants will learn strategic planning skills, analyse solutions and acquire the hard-skills to implement ideas.

Tactical Tech's agenda is triggered by a deep desire to promote the use of Info-Activism in advocacy. It is our constant endeavour to research information, communication and digital technologies in order to unearth novel techniques and tactics to support advocates' efforts in their campaigns.

  • Video Catches Cops in the Act

An anonymous citizen calling himself the Targuist Sniper from Targuist, a small Berber town in the north of Morocco, posted on Youtube (http://uk.youtube.com/user/TarSniper) several videos showing Moroccan police officers accepting cash bribes from truck drivers and potential smugglers.
The videos generated wide debate in the world press and discussions on the internet, but they were never mentioned in the state media. The video represents a new method of cyberactivism which has helped in fighting widespread corruption in government institutions.
